The 2013-2014 Swim Season is fast approaching!  We only have about a week until practice/tryouts starts for the new season!   Please pass this email to anyone you know who would like to tryout.  Swimming is a lot of fun!

Our big new is that we have two new coaches this year!

We would like to welcome our new Head Coach.  Ryan Smith is a new Physics teacher at AHS.  He comes to us with a wealth of both summer and high school coaching experience (AND is a graduate of Va Tech!!!!  Go Hokies).  We are happy to have him at Annandale as a teacher and a coach. Click here for Coach Smiths complete Bio.   Jessica Klein is a Math teacher at AHS and an AHS graduate.  During her high school years, she was a swimming Atom and a coach at Bryhill Crest!  Thank you Coach Klein for agreeing to help!

Tryouts start November 11th – Swimmers cannot tryout without the required forms including the VHSL physical form (2013 version)!!!!

As with all sports at AHS, EVERYONE who wishes to participate in tryouts and practice must have all required forms turned in prior to participating.  No forms – no swim. Please hand all forms into Coach Smith in room 109 if possible this week but by the morning of Monday November 11th .

Below are the links to the online concussion awareness training for student and parent and the required forms.  Concussion training and forms are required prior to swimming trying out or practicing!

If you have any problems with the forms or questions, contact Coach Smith at

Extracurricular Participation Policy 2012-13

Time trials will be the November 13th and 14th.  In the event that cuts need to be made times from time trials will serve as a cut off.  The team numbers are limited to 30 boys, 30 girls, and 10 divers.  If an athlete is injured and cannot participate in time trials their best time from last season will be taken into consideration.  USS swimmers must be present for at least one day of time trials.  All swimmers must be present every day unless they have talked to and received approval from Coach Smith or Coach Klein about missing tryouts/practice.

All swimmers/divers not driving to practice should report to Coach Smith’s room (room 109) after school to catch the bus at 2:30.  Things swimmers should bring to practice include suit, towel, cap (if you have long hair), goggles, flip flops/sandals, and dryland clothes (running pants, t shirt, tennis shoes,  and  sweatshirt).

Officials - If you are a current stroke and turn, starter, or ref please contact Doug Padrutt at to make sure he has you name and contact information.  Also, there is a Swim and Dive Clinic on November 20th at Oakton High School.  If you have any questions contact Doug.

Terry Boyd and I (Mary Padrutt) have volunteered to be team parents.  We can be reached at .  My cell no is 703-203-2037.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We are both new and would appreciate any input.

Please check the website for information about the season.  We will be updating the website with information about the schedule, drop off times for meets, signups for timers, info about pasta dinners and anything else we can think of.  FYI- This year spirit wear will be sold online from the website (coming soon).  Swimsuits and caps will still be handled with paper order form and check.

If you do not want to get emails in the future, please let me know and we will remove your email address.

Looking forward to a fun and rewarding season!

Good Afternoon,

With the 2012-2013 swim season fast approaching, I cannot express how excited I am to coach the Annandale Swim & Dive Team! Having met a number of the student athletes, I am confident that with dedicated practice, teamwork, great team spirit, and great team support, we will have many fast swims and TEAM victories upcoming this season.

As you embark on this exciting mission to be the best swimmer/diver in and out of the water, I encourage all athletes to work hard in practice and in the classroom this winter. The work put in will show at the end of the season!

Before I go into details about the season, I just want to highlight how important it is to also continue to succeed in your studies. Please contact me at if you are going to miss a practice due to school, another club, visiting colleges or any other reason. Coaches will be receiving an end of the 2nd quarter grade reports; so let us study hard and aim to be at the top of Annandale Winter Sports team GPAs.

All practices will still be at Audrey Moore RECenter located at 8100 Braddock Road Annandale, VA 22003. The practices times however have changed. The new practice times this year are from 4:15 PM-5:30 PM for diving, and from 4:30 PM -5:30 PM for swimming. All swimmers with proper paper work completed and turned in to the Annandale Activities office will be able to practice starting Monday, November 5, 2012. Annandale's Swim/Dive tryouts will be held on Wednesday, November 7th and Thursday, November 8th. The tryout requirements will be announced at the first team practice. For all the athletes who make the 2012-2013 Swim/Dive team there will be amandatory team meeting on November 9th right after school. The location of that meeting will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Pre-Season conditioning will be offered starting on Monday, October 15, 2012. All conditioning practices are optional, but I highly encourage athletes to participate. We will be meeting 3 times a week until the start of the season. Monday & Wednesday mornings we will meet at 6:20am in the Annandale weight room, and on Tuesday at 2:30pm outside the AD office.

Before any athletes are allowed to practice or join the team in the pre-season workouts, every athlete needs to fill out the FCPS mandated forms. Parents, please take a look at the below forms and work with your athlete to ensure they are turned in ASAP.

FCPS Forms

Forms needed to be completed and turned in before November 5th, the first day of pre-season practice:

Also, if you are an athlete that would like to drive to practice, make sure you turn in the Student/Passenger Acknowledgement of Risk Form(s) prior to November 5th. FCPS does not allow coaches to let athletes use their own transportation unless we have the correct information on file.

Swim Suit and Spirit Wear

Senior athletes will be meeting in the next week to select the 2012-2013 swim suits. At that meeting, a suit/spirit wear form will be created; the form will be sent out to parents, and posted on the AHS Swim & Dive website. Email Feb 16 '12 A couple more notes for States...

posted Sep 15, 2012, 3:11 AM by AHS Swim and Dive Team

There were some questions being asked tonight so I wanted to go over some details and where to find details... always check on the state meet info link....

The kids should have money with then for lunch tomorrow, and there will be a room with limited concessions and a screen printing company for additional state t-shirts printed on a variety of styles etc so they might want additional money for that ...

As always with lots of people around, please be careful not to leave valuables in plain site.

Friday plan...
They will leave school and go to Oaton H.S. to pick up their passes
Then go out to lunch
Then go to GMU for warmups
Meet starts at 4pm... Guessing the earliest they could swim would be around 5:45pm but you never know and with hiccups it most likely will be later... could be an hour later.. But I would always err on the earlier side and get there with plenty of time to spare... you might end up watching some incredible races but at least you won't miss the relay ;-)... (Hope that makes sense... below I made an approximate timeline if it ran like clockwork... which it doesn't haha... )

Driving there... multiple ways... one way is straight out Braddock, past Roberts Road to GMU large entrance sign, right turn into university, then park in lot C to right or lot A to the left, Aquatic Center is just up the hill past the parking lot C on the right.

Reminder the state meet announcement with details is on our website...
State Meet Announcement - Click for more Information
**General Admission is $10/session

Any other questions?  I'll try to find the answer ..

KEY TO REMEMBER WITH THIS TIMELINE IS... IT IS VERY APPROXIMATE JUST TAKING IN TIME IN WATER AND VERY LITTLE LEEWAY ... IT HAS POSSIBLE ENDING AT 7PM AND THE MEET INFO SAYS 8:30... SO THEY HAVE 90 MORE MINS TO PLAY WITH ...   If you add in one min between every heat that would come close ... and put the relay 49 mins later...  6:37pm

4pm Event 1 200 medley relay 3  heats..@ less than 2mins
4:06 Event 2  200 medley relay 4 heats @ less than 2 mins
